my manhattan destiny

I had dreams of New York City. I’m sure a lot of people also do. When I was in the US in 2010, I wanted to go to New York to watch musicals in Broadway and drink coffee in a warm café in the coldness of winter. That didn’t happen unfortunately, because North Carolina was too far away from it and I’d only have the weekend to go there. When I went back to the Philippines, things came from normal to crazy until I was left to end my 1.5-year bond with my former company. Work was stressful and my quest for money and creativity were little fulfilled so I decided I wanted to rest and work from home, with blessings from my coffee-shop friends – the SB (Starbucks) Girls.

Well, so much for working from home and starting my own business because an offer from a law firm (my current employer) came before my resignation’s effective date. I accepted the offer maybe because I was afraid of living with my mom in the province again or I that wouldn’t have enough money to buy clothes, books, or travel tickets. But it wasn’t all about being afraid, I guess. I also took signs from the stars; and by stars, I mean Chris Colfer, Lea Michele, Isla Fisher, and Anne Hathaway. Chris and Lea’s character in Glee wanted to study in New York;

Anne (The Devil Wears Prada) works for the biggest most fabulous magazine in New York and she wore impeccable clothes;

and Becky Bloomwood (Isla from Confessions of A Shopaholic)) met her prince charming in New York! I mean, that’s all I ever wanted my whole life!!!

Okay, maybe not all. And maybe, New York is too far from reality. So I guess… I’d have to stick it up in Makati instead. But don’t get me wrong. Makati, at least the central business district, isn’t bad at all, and I work in the best building in the whole of Ayala Avenue. The lobby is just huge and magnificent, and if I wear the right clothes, I may just feel like a fashionable yuppie, minus the high heels.

I was surprised however, when our director from New York told me that she’ll be sending me either in London or New York next year for business travel. I wouldn’t want to get my hopes up, of course, lest I get crushed to pieces when the plan gets aborted. But… do you believe in signs? Because I think I do… kinda.

Have you watched The Devil Wears Prada? Okay, good. There’s the boss, Miranda, right? And she has two assistants? The first assistant is the British, Emily, and the second is the newbie, Andrea. Long story short, we’re like that in Have you watched The Devil Wears Prada? Okay, good. There’s the boss, Miranda, right? And she has two assistants? The first assistant is the British, Emily, and the second is the newbie, Andrea. Long story short, we’re like that in the office. Yes, I promise – except we coordinators are both male, and the first assistant (let’s call him Missy) is far from slim. And would you believe that Missy has British accent and introduces me to the other employees as “the new me”? I was like wearing my shock face when I realized this in the taxi going home from work. Sigh… New York! When will I ever greet you hello?
